Is a GKI exam required for van drivers?
Van drivers do not need to take the GKI exam if the total weight of the vehicle does not exceed 3.5 tons. The GKI exam is mandatory for vehicles with a total weight exceeding 3.5 tons.
Since 2014.09.10, professional drivers cannot operate without a valid GKI certificate! The Driver's Qualification Card is a blue plastic card. It serves to prove the professional qualifications of bus drivers and truck drivers.
Every truck driver with a C1, C, C1+E, or C+E category license, or a bus driver with a D1, D, D1+E, or D+E category license who wishes to drive a vehicle for income as a professional driver must possess a GKI certificate. Therefore, it is mandatory not only for hauliers but also for transport vehicle drivers to complete the course. With the GKI certificate issued by the Ministry of Innovation and Technology (formerly NKH, National Development Ministry), drivers can work anywhere within the EU.
